Prestvannet is a lake on the high central plateau of Tromsøya, the island at the heart of Tromsø in northern Norway. It sits above the town, ringed by birch and marsh. A protected bird sanctuary, in summer it draws nesting waterfowl and waders, and a flat gravel path loops around it in under an hour, popular with walkers, runners and, once the snow settles, cross-country skiers. For all that it lies within the city, the spot feels a world away from the streets below. That height and openness make Prestvannet one of the most convenient aurora spots in Tromsø. The city sits at around 70°N, deep inside the auroral zone, and although Tromsø’s lights are close, the lake’s elevated setting and clear horizon give a genuine chance of the northern lights over the water on a dark winter night, without leaving town.
