Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is one of Iceland’s most iconic natural landmarks, a dramatic two-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. The river drops 32 metres in two stages into a rugged canyon, sending up clouds of spray that catch the light and give the falls their name. Part of the famous Golden Circle route, Gullfoss is around 90 minutes’ drive from Reykjavík and is one of the most visited sites in the country. In winter, the surrounding landscape is blanketed in snow and ice, and the falls partially freeze, creating a stark and beautiful scene. The site has a visitor centre and café, and well-maintained viewing platforms offer close-up views of both tiers of the falls. Gullfoss narrowly escaped being dammed for hydroelectric power in the early 20th century, thanks in large part to the efforts of Sigríður Tómasdóttir, a local farmer’s daughter whose campaign to save the falls is commemorated at the site.

  • Amazing waterfalls. Be careful in winter as the paths can be sure slippy especially when there’s rain or a thaw after the snow.
