Glymur is a Waterfall at Botnstalsvegur, Mosfellsbær, Iceland

Glymur is a towering waterfall in Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord), about an hour’s drive north of Reykjavík. At 198 metres, it was long considered Iceland’s tallest waterfall until the discovery of Morsárfoss in 2007. The falls plunge into a narrow, moss-covered canyon, and reaching the best viewpoint requires a moderately challenging hike of around 3-4 hours round trip. The trail involves crossing a river via a log bridge (or wading in summer when the log is removed), climbing steeply through birch woodland, and traversing exposed cliff paths with chain handholds in places. The reward is a dramatic view down into the canyon with the falls cascading into the gorge below. The hike is best attempted between May and October when the trail is clear of snow, though experienced hikers do visit in winter with appropriate equipment. Glymur sees far fewer visitors than the Golden Circle waterfalls, making it a quieter alternative for those willing to earn the view. The surrounding Hvalfjörður area is sparsely populated with very little light pollution, and the fjord’s north-facing aspect provides a clear view towards the aurora oval on active nights.

The aurora season here runs from September to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October and March. With minimal light pollution, Glymur could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.
