Scalloway Castle stands in the village of Scalloway, once the capital of Shetland. The tower house was built around 1600 by Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney, a tyrannical ruler whose forced labour raised it and who was later executed for his misrule. Though roofless now, the stout stone shell survives, a stark reminder of a harsh chapter in the islands' history, looking out over the sheltered harbour.
