Fort Charlotte is a five-sided artillery fort in the heart of Lerwick, built in the 17th century to guard the sound against the Dutch and later rebuilt and named for Queen Charlotte. Its sturdy stone walls, pierced for cannon, stand right above the harbour, and from the ramparts there are fine views over the water. One of the best-preserved forts of its kind in Scotland, it is woven into the fabric of the town.
