Astotin Lake is the centrepiece of Elk Island National Park, east of Edmonton, an island-dotted lake fringed by aspen woods. Trails, a beach, picnic spots and a boardwalk make it a focus for visitors, with bison, birds and other wildlife often about. Within a dark sky preserve away from city glow, its open shore is a superb place for stargazing and the northern lights on a clear night.
