Øvre Dividal National Park is one of the emptiest corners of Europe. It lies in the interior of Troms in northern Norway, in the municipality of Målselv, close to the Swedish and Finnish borders. This is a remote wilderness of rolling forested valleys, open plateaux and countless lakes and rivers. The park protects one of the largest tracts of untouched old-growth pine and birch forest in the region, and an unusually rich cast of large predators for Scandinavia, brown bear, lynx, wolverine and golden eagle, alongside moose and reindeer herded by local Sámi. Long hiking and skiing routes thread through it, most famously the Troms Border Trail with its chain of simple cabins, drawing walkers, ski tourers and dog-sledders after genuine solitude. There are no towns or streetlights for many kilometres in any direction. That, and a position at around 69°N well inside the auroral zone, gives the park superb dark skies, and on clear winter nights the aurora fills the sky above the frozen lakes and forests.
