Central Park is a small, leafy town park on the banks of the Bow River in Banff. It sits on Buffalo Street, a short walk from the shops and restaurants of downtown. This is a gentle green space of mown lawns, mature trees, flower beds and picnic tables, with a gazebo and riverside paths that link to the pedestrian bridge over the Bow. People come to pass a relaxed afternoon, with fine views up the river to the surrounding peaks, and the park hosts community events through the summer. It is not the obvious place for aurora watching. Town-centre streetlights brighten the sky, and at around 51°N the northern lights are uncommon and low in the north to begin with. Still, during a strong storm the open riverside outlook gives a clear enough view north to catch a glimpse.
