Bjørnfjell is a mountain in the countryside inland of Alta, in Finnmark in the far north of Norway, rising above the Nordelvdalen valley east of the town. Its name means Bear Mountain. This is quieter, wilder ground than the fells right beside Alta, a rounded upland of heath, bog and bare rock reached on foot from the valley below, with wide views over the surrounding hills and waterways of interior Finnmark. Walkers come in the long summer daylight; in winter the deep snow makes it ski and snowshoe country. Alta sits in a broad inland valley at around 70°N, well known for the dry, clear skies that make this one of the better parts of the north for the aurora. Out here, away from the town and any streetlight, the darkness is complete, and on a clear winter night the northern lights sweep across the whole sky above the fells.
