Goðafoss is a Waterfall at Sprengisandur, 640 Laugar, Iceland

Goðafoss is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, on the Skjálfandafljót river in the north of the country, an easy stop just off the Ring Road between Akureyri and Lake Mývatn. The river tumbles over a broad, curving ledge some 12 metres high in a graceful horseshoe, a sight that draws photographers, hikers and nature lovers alike. Its name, the Waterfall of the Gods, comes from a story of the year 1000, when the lawspeaker Þorgeir, having declared Iceland a Christian country, is said to have cast his carved images of the old Norse gods into the falls. Reached in a short drive from Akureyri, it sits at around 65°N, and on a clear winter night the aurora can appear over the water.

  • "Waterfall of the Gods." A must see for anyone visiting Iceland anytime! Back in 2018, the east side was open, but now due to constructions, the only access is via the west side of the waterfall.
