Laanilan Kievari is a restaurant just south of Saariselkä, an area that has been that has been drawing visitors for more than a century. Once the destination of gold seekers heading for Laanila, it now offers something just as valuable: unhurried time over good food and wine. The kitchen blends French and Karelian influences with local Lapland ingredients, backed by an extensive wine list, and hosts seasonal events such as a Christmas brunch, a May Day brunch and a Maundy Thursday wine tasting feast. The old building, with its open fireplace, rag rugs and warm service, is a cosy setting, and an on-site Arctic Spa offers sauna, an outdoor hot tub and ice swimming.
