Hallgrímskirkja is Reykjavík's towering landmark church, its soaring concrete facade designed to echo the basalt columns of Iceland's lava landscapes. Rising on a hill above the city, it is visible from far and wide, and a lift carries visitors up its 74-metre tower for the finest panorama in Reykjavík, out over the coloured rooftops to the sea and mountains. A statue of Leif Erikson stands before it, a gift from the United States.

  • At 74.5 meters, you would have been able to see all the activities of Reykjavik's year as European Capital of Culture in 2000 from the tower of this church and sometime concert hall.
