Seiland National Park covers over half of Seiland, a wild, mountainous island off the coast of Finnmark in the far north of Norway, out beyond Alta and Hammerfest. There are no roads in. The park is reached only by boat, and once ashore it is a place of steep peaks, deep fjords cutting far inland, waterfalls and quiet valleys, with almost no permanent inhabitants. Its great surprise is ice: the island carries two small glaciers, among the most northerly in the world, clinging to the high ground. Reindeer are ferried across each summer to graze the slopes, tended by Sámi herders, and sea eagles patrol the coast. This is genuine wilderness for experienced hikers and kayakers, not casual visitors. At around 70°N the island lies deep in the auroral zone, far from any artificial light, and on a clear night the northern lights blaze over its glaciers and empty fjords in near-total darkness.
